Though he was articulate and a lauded humanitarian, his stiff demeanor was off-putting, and, as he later told me, “most criminals aren’t very sympathetic.” But that isn’t why Friedmann decided not to take the stand. He felt that he had no way of disproving the charge. Moreover, he knew that the prosecutors might ask him certain questions that, if answered truthfully, could help insure his own conviction.
